Report: LeBron taking veteran minimum isn’t in cards ‘at all’
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and there could be several teams bidding for his services.
In fact, it was recently reported that virtually “every contender” has reached out about the four-time champion with an eye on his future.
However, if James does return for a 24th NBA season, he is not expected to take a veteran minimum deal.
“Last Tuesday…I said that there were many people around the league who thought that LeBron should take a veteran minimum salary,” NBA insider Jake Fischer said. “It does not sound like that is actually in the cards at all. I wanna be very, very clear about that after some text messages and phone calls I received.”
It makes sense that James wouldn’t want to take a minimum deal since he was an All-Star in the 2025-26 season and is still one of the league’s most productive players. However, that could limit the number of teams that could truly pursue him in the offseason without the help of a sign-and-trade.
If James is looking to make a similar salary to what he made in the 2025-26 season and remain in contention, he will likely need to return to the Lakers – if they’re willing to take him at that number – or find a team that is willing to do a sign-and-trade with Los Angeles.
The 41-year-old averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game while shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from 3 during the 2025-26 regular season, showing that he can still produce at an All-Star level.
James helped the Lakers earn the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference, and he carved out a nice role as the No. 3 option alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves when all three were healthy.
Then, with both of those guards injured to start the playoffs, James led the Lakers to a 3-0 series lead against the Houston Rockets. Los Angeles ended up taking that series in six games, but it was swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round.
Doncic did not play in the postseason, but Reaves returned for the final six games of L.A.’s playoff run. James finished the postseason averaging 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per contest across 10 games.
The four-time league MVP is going to have a serious market in the offseason (if he decides to keep playing) because he’s still an elite talent, but it’ll be interesting to see how much teams are willing to pay for him in his 24th NBA season.

Magic Johnson implies Lakers may have no chance in West in coming years
Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson shared an honest take on social media about the Western Conference following Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.
“I hate to break the news to the rest of the Western Conference, but they may not have a chance to win the Western Conference Finals for the next 5-7 years,” Johnson wrote on X. “The Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs are just that good! They are talented, deep, athletic and both teams are well coached.”
The Thunder and Spurs played an extremely close Game 1 on Monday, with San Antonio winning in double overtime. It’s pretty clear that the two teams – who each won over 60 games in the regular season – are well ahead of the rest of the competition in the West, if not the entire NBA.
That’s bad news for the Lakers, as they likely will have to go through one – if not both – of these teams in the future to reach an NBA Finals. Even though the Lakers have a new cornerstone in Luka Doncic to lead their franchise for the foreseeable future, the Thunder and Spurs are loaded with young star talent.
OKC swept the Lakers in the second round of the playoffs this season (Doncic did miss the series with a hamstring injury), and it had not lost a playoff game in 2026 until Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
Meanwhile, the Spurs have rising stars like Victor Wembanyama (third season in the NBA), Stephon Castle (second season in the NBA) and Dylan Harper (a rookie). All three players were awesome in Game 1 on Monday, with Wembanyama (41 points and 24 rebounds) leading the way. That’s without even mentioning 28-year-old All-Star De’Aaron Fox, who missed Game 1.
The Spurs and Thunder are both set up to contend for titles for years to come, and Oklahoma City already won the 2025 NBA Finals with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams leading the way. All three of those players are locked into long-term deals with the Thunder.
The bar for the Lakers to clear in the West is extremely high, but they do have a chance to improve their roster this offseason. They are set to have several unrestricted free agents, including LeBron James, which could help them open up cap space to add to the team.
Plus, Los Angeles was the No. 4 seed in the West and won a playoff series in the 2025-26 campaign even though Doncic missed the entire playoff run.
Johnson may be worried about other teams in the West competing, but as long as Doncic is healthy, the Lakers have one of the best players in the league to go and challenge the Spurs and Thunder.

Lakers Reportedly Not Planning Major Roster Changes During 2026 Offseason
Victor Wembanyama is quietly reshaping Lakers' offseason strategy
